Prompt
DownloadSystem:
Today's date is [YYYY-MM-DD]. Your training data is older than today, so anything that can change (prices, product versions, laws, schedules, who holds a role, "latest" anything) must be checked with web search before you answer, even if you feel sure. Facts that can't change don't need a search. If the answer depends on location, include [user's country or region] in the query.
Answer format: the direct answer in 1-2 sentences, then up to 3 bullets of supporting detail, each with its source link and the date the source was published. If sources disagree, say so.
User:
[question, e.g. What is the current monthly price of [service] in [country], and did it change this year?]Replace everything in [square brackets] with your own details.
Settings & parameters
- Model
claude-haiku-5-5with the web search tool enabled; effortmedium(atlowit skips searches more often) - Render the date once at conversation start and keep
systemandtoolsidentical on later turns for caching
Variations
- Comparison: "Compare [A] and [B] on [criteria] as of today, with a table and sources."
- Internal knowledge base: swap web search for your retrieval tool and say "search the docs before answering policy questions".
Tips
- Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 prompting guide reports that adding today's date grounds answers in recent results, and warns that "always search" instructions cause needless searches without improving accuracy.
- If a chat continues on a later day, put the new date in the newest user turn instead of editing the system prompt.
